To anyone looking around St Helen's, it is clear that we have a thriving Art Department. What might not be so obvious is the number of opportunities for girls throughout the school to cultivate their interest in a range of artistic media. The clubs are open to everyone and do not require previous experience - enthusiasm and commitment are all we ask!
In Lower School, girls can choose from art, pottery and design technology clubs each week (and some choose to attend more than one of these). These clubs provide the opportunity to work with different materials and techniques, to extend skills and to find enjoyment in the process of creating. Art club has recently covered: fashion design, glass-painting, painting on canvas, fabric painting, plaster of Paris casting, modroc and wire sculpture. In pottery club the girls are free to design their own projects using techniques such as: press moulding, slip stencilling, slab building, coiling and modelling. A range of decorating and glazing methods are also taught. Girls attending design technology club have made mirror frames, jewellery boxes and objects of their own design from wood, acrylic and mosaic.
There are also art, pottery and design clubs each week for girls in the Middle School and Upper School. These clubs can be used to give extra working time and assistance for coursework projects. Girls who no longer take these as exam subjects may attend for enjoyment and to keep developing their skills. A number of 6th form girls, no longer taking art, opt to come to life drawing classes after school.
