St Helen’s has a thriving drama department which aims to provide high quality extra-curricular productions that are open to everyone. Each year we stage at least one senior production (jointly with Abingdon School), one middle school production and one lower school production. In addition to this, Abingdon School provides a joint senior production. And this is only the beginning... In 2011 our first opera Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell was performed in conjunction with St. Peter’s College, Oxford, and a cast of staff and pupils past and present put on a rehearsed reading of the brand new play Blue on Blue by old girl Charly Clive. Over the past year we’ve also seen performances of The Ash Girl, Metamorphosis, A Question of Courage, Romeo and Juliet and Earthquakes in London. As well as staff-directed plays, girls also produce, direct and perform productions themselves throughout the year and the two Lower school drama clubs work towards lunchtime performances, based on improvisational work done throughout the year.
In July 2012 we are undertaking a new and exciting venture. 20 St Helen’s girls and Abingdon boys, along with Mr Hogben, Mr Taylor (Abingdon School) and Mrs Mason, will be travelling to Japan to perform a devised show and attend workshops on Bunraku puppetry.
Quite simply, there is so much going on in SHSK Drama. If you are passionate about theatre, keen to learn and willing to devote time and energy to creating exciting work then there will be something here for you to be involved in!
