Lessons frequently take place outside the classroom enabling us to make the most of the opportunities and facilities around the school and further afield. The Junior Department has its own play area in the orchard, and this is used regularly for lessons as well as for break and lunchtime play.
Girls are encouraged to participate in numerous extra curricular activities and lunchtime clubs, including sports and music clubs, arts and crafts, drama and philosophy clubs. Years 5 and 6 join together at Christmas and in the Trinity term to create and perform exciting productions, and they take part in whole-school events such as St Kate’s Day and the Music Festival.
Girls are able to take part in a wide variety of sports including: netball, lacrosse, hockey, gymnastics, rounders, tennis and athletics.
We also use the swimming pool at Abingdon School. Junior girls have matches with other schools as well as competing in the school sports day and swimming gala.
In May each year, the Junior Department organises a residential trip in order to foster a growing sense of independence and responsibility in the girls. Outdoor and adventurous activities such as climbing, kayaking and abseiling, linked with cross curricular learning opportunities e.g. rock pooling and beach investigations, provide pupils with a wonderful experience and encourage social development outside the school environment.
