Cross-country invitational tournament

Each November, local maintained and independent schools gather on St Helen’s Church Farm playing fields for the invitational cross-country tournament. Schools which have participated in the past include Stockcross, Appleton, Falkland, St Lawrence’s, Windrush Valley, King Alfred’s, The Abbey, Tudor Hall, Oxford High and Headington.

Students from Year 5 to Year 10 participate in the kilometre-long relay race, accompanied by full-throated support from the sidelines and encouragement from fellow runners along the course. A good-natured medal ceremony concludes the competition

“The invitational cross-country relay is always a fun, enjoyable event with the opportunity to race against lots of different schools from around the area. It was really nice to compete as a team and support other years whilst they ran.”

Wasps Netball Academy Hub

St Helen’s became a Wasps Netball Academy hub, the Oxford base for Wasps Netball Academy, in 2019. Since its creation in 2016, Wasps Netball had been expanding its reach through community engagement, bringing netball hubs to locations around the UK.

With the success of The Roses at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, netball saw a ‘big boom’ in England (BBC Sport) among both girls and boys – St Helen’s aimed to be at the forefront of developing this enthusiasm in Abingdon and the surrounding area.

Since the beginning of the partnership St Helen’s has hosted netball camps for children aged 11–16 throughout Oxfordshire. The opportunity allows students to benefit from some of the best coaching in the country and also allows us to share our amazing sports facilities.
