On 3 October, Year 9 musicians travelled to Oxford Town Hall to a schools’ concert given as part of the annual Oxford Chamber Music Festival. The theme of this year’s festival is Elements (Earth, Water, Fire and Air) and the concert was introduced by Classic FM and the BBC’s Alexander Armstrong. It featured a performance of a new work by contemporary composer Sally Beamish as well as stunning performances from festival director, Priya Mitchell, who played Winter from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams. Perhaps the highlight of the afternoon was the performance of Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations by former BBC Young Musician of the Year, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, whose extraordinary musicianship and flair had the audience entirely captivated. His choice of repertoire linked perfectly with the Year 9 scheme of work and they were certainly inspired by what they witnessed.
