Sixth Form English students travelled to Oxford Playhouse this week to watch a critically acclaimed performance of Othello performed by the English Touring Theatre. It was a really interesting interpretation of the classic Shakespeare play, with the lead Othello being extremely young and this being his first professional performance. We thought he was pretty incredible and provided a very different perspective to the play. This interpretation of the play focused on religion and the difficulties of fitting into a society that is driven by discrimination. Othello was forced to hide his Muslim faith in order to fit into the society around him. I think the performance was extremely powerful for all of us – making us think about the perception and power of religion in our society today.
