On Tuesday evening the final Strings’ Concert of the year took place in Chapel and was a delightful blend of bowed strings soloists and ensembles, featuring performers ranging from the Junior School to Upper Sixth leavers.
Fresh from their success at the recent Abingdon Music Festival, Violas! began proceedings with a spirited rendition of Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba which was followed by solo performances of music by Arlen, Bach, Dvorak and Elgar. There were some goodbyes to be said to members of Upper Sixth who featured prominently in the concert and the Steinway Trio (comprising Maryse, Naomi and Vicky) gave a beautiful performance of Reinecke’s Piano Trio no. 1. More solo repertoire for violin, viola and cello followed before Cello and Bass Squad set feet tapping with an arrangement of Summer Nights from Grease. Our Head of Strings, Mrs Walton, publically thanked our Upper Sixth performers individually and the evening ended with the Camerata and Upper Sixth String Ensemble having enormous fun with Abreu’s Tico Tico. The audience certainly enjoyed themselves and our thanks go to all the performers who participated in such a wonderful event.
